UNC’s Medical Education Development (MED) program provides underserved and underrepresented students with an avenue to explore their interest in applying for medical or dental school. The students supported by this program may not otherwise pursue a career in medicine, filling a critical gap in the pipeline for future doctors and dentists. Over 300 students apply for 80 slots each year.
Since many students do not have the financial flexibility to give up a summer of work, the program provides a $2,400 stipend to help offset the nine weeks of lost income.
For the past several years, these students have generously given back a portion of their stipend to invest in the program’s future. This year, they contributed $1,815 toward an overall summer campaign that raised $13,499 from program alumni and friends – the largest amount to date.
The MED program wrapped up its 44th year in July. The program not only creates future leaders in healthcare, but also in philanthropy.
