Dr. Leigh with a patient

Dr. Margaret “Magee” Leigh has served as a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics and the Pulmonary Division for over 40 years. Throughout her tenure, she has provided care for children with chronic lung diseases, taught medical students, residents and pulmonary fellows and engaged in research of chronic lung diseases with a specific focus on cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia.

During her career, Dr. Leigh has received various awards and honors including, but not limited to, the Teaching Award from the Pediatric Residents, the UNC Department of Pediatrics Faculty Mentor Award, and the American Thoracic Society Pediatric Assembly’s Lifetime Contribution to Pediatric Respiratory Medicine Award.  She also received the Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Foundation Award for 15 years of dedication, perseverance and passion.

She has written almost 30 book chapters and over 125 refereed research articles. Her research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Foundation, European Commission, and the American Lung Association.

Most importantly, her wisdom and mission-focused approach to advancing respiratory health for children is inspirational! That is why we wish to honor Dr. Leigh’s legacy with a lectureship in her honor. The lectureship will help us bring in experts from around the world to help train and inform the next generation of learners. She is a true servant leader whose mentorship has impacted many faculty, fellows, residents, and students.  Dr. Leigh has had an incredible impact on the care of hundreds of children and families in North Carolina, nationally and internationally.

Please join us today by honoring Dr. Leigh’s retirement with a gift to support the Dr. Margaret Leigh Lectureship!

Donations made in Dr. Leigh’s honor are intended to be used to create a named lectureship in her honor.  However, should the donations not reach the minimum amount required for a lectureship ($100,000), the funds will be used in her honor within the UNC Children’s Excellence Fund in support of the clinical, research and education efforts of UNC Children’s.
