The Uganda Rural Health Fund, jointly established by physicians and researchers at the UNC School of Medicine and the Mbarara University of Science and Technology, is dedicated to improving health in the most remote areas of western Uganda. Current efforts are focused in Kasese District, at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains which separate Uganda from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Residents of this area, most of whom are subsistence farmers living on less than two dollars a day, suffer a high burden of malaria and other infectious diseases, as well as chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke for which few services are currently available. Emergent needs, such as a Cesarean section for obstructed labor or stroke from uncontrolled hypertension, require long journeys on the back of a motorcycle over often impassable dirt roads.
