At UNC Medicine, we get many questions about who we are and what exactly it is that we do. Between UNC Medicine, UNC Hospitals, and UNC School of Medicine, we know that this jumble of brands can quickly become confusing. We want to help you understand why we are here and how we all work together!

UNC Medicine is a nonprofit organization that was originally chartered in 1949 as the Medical Foundation of North Carolina, Inc.

We foster private gift support of programs throughout the School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals, and are the philanthropic counterpart to these organizations.

To put it simply, we raise money to make the activities at UNC Hospitals and UNC School of Medicine possible. From research, to medical education, to day-to-day patient care, we help fund every aspect of UNC’s health system. We closed fiscal year 2019 having raised $172 million for all of these programs (our best year ever!).

Our name, “UNC Medicine,” is the all-encompassing term for the fundraising activities across all departments and centers at UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals.

So, what does this mean if you are a donor to UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, UNC Children’s, the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases, or any other area?

We are one large family of departments and centers, but your gift will always benefit the specific area that you designate. Your donations keep research, patient care, and education going, from discovering innovative cancer treatments to providing a state-of-the-art facility to our medical students.

If you ever have any questions about how we support medical advancement at UNC, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at uncmedicine@med.unc.edu or 919-966-1201. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter at @UNCMedicine to stay up to date on our latest news and activities. We would love to connect with you!

Thank you for your support of UNC Medicine.
