The UNC Department of Ophthalmology has an unwavering mission to improve the eye health of our patients by providing the highest quality clinical care, pioneering new ways to treat and prevent eye disease, and educating the next generation of ophthalmologists through our resident and fellow program, now in its 66th year. We welcome patients and their families to an environment that is supportive and collegial, ensuring the best service and care.
Building on the strength of its current team of clinicians, researchers, and collaborative relationships, Kittner Eye has established the Carolina Eye Research Institute. This dynamic Institute will lead the way in discovering new treatments, delivering innovative methods to restore sight, and performing thoughtful clinical trials.
As we move forward to establish the Carolina Eye Research Institute, we seek partners to invest in these efforts.

Ophthalmology Fund
The Department relies on annual gifts to support new research projects, patient care, administrative support, and new equipment purchases. Through these efforts, we maintain our commitment to serve all who need our help, including those who cannot afford quality eye care and treatment, locally and globally. Your support will make a difference, now and in the future.
UNC Eye Research Institute Fund
The National Federation of the Blind reports that 254,000 individuals in North Carolina live with visual disability (source: https://nfb.org/blindness-statistics). Imagine research that improves vision, prevents eye disease, enables people at risk for visual impairment to prevent and delay blindness, and offers those with visual impairment opportunities that many of us take for granted. This is what we imagine at UNC Ophthalmology.
Ophthalmology Resident Research, Training and Education Fund
Kittner Eye Center has been training residents in ophthalmology since the 1960’s, providing clinical opportunities for those interested in pursuing careers as ophthalmologists. Kittner Eye Center currently has four positions per year for residents and offers a rigorous, hands-on experience. Funds supporting residency education are used for travel, meetings, and research projects by Kittner Eye residents.
