Patient Care

The Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Neurology offer world-class patient care and support services allowing us to help more people with neurological issues. As neurological needs continue to grow, our Neuroscience ICU and Pediatric Neuroscience services offer excellent care to people who need it the most.

• Focus on minimally invasive brain surgery through techniques like Deep Brain Stimulation and brain mapping
• Advance existing efforts in gene replacement for autism and other diseases
• Offer individualized and ground-breaking brain tumor care
• The only facility in the state of North Carolina and one of the few in the Southeastern United States to perform in utero spina bifida surgeries.

Drs. Nina Browner and Richard Murrow were recipients of the 2020 UNC Health and UNC Faculty Physicians Award for Carolina Care Excellence. When surveyed, their patients gave them the highest possible rating, placing them in the top quartile nationally.

In its December 2020 issue, Business North Carolina published a list of North Carolina’s Top Doctors as identified by doctors. Six UNC Neurology physicians were selected including Drs. Nina Browner, Michael Forbes, Daniel Roque, Heidi Roth, Bradley Vaughn and Hae Won Shin.

Research

The UNC Neuroscience Center, the Department of Neurosurgery, and the Department of Neurology are at the forefront of making discoveries to find cures and therapies for genetic diseases and other neurological diseases that affect so many in the state of North Carolina and around the world. Given the opportunity to strengthen our clinical research, clinical trials, and drug discovery capabilities, we can change lives through treatments and cures.

• Establish a comprehensive research center for the aging brain, with focused efforts in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and aging with autism.
• Advance our autism research center’s efforts in patient care, education and research, creating hope and providing support for people of all ages, with all types of autism.
• Dedicate more resources to the spinal care program, the Concussion Clinic, spine fractures in the elderly, as well as stroke, epilepsy and hydrocephalus research.

Education

We are educating the best and the brightest in neurological care through our world-renowned training program. Support of our medical student, resident and fellowship opportunities will allow us to give trainees opportunities to enhance their skills through state-of-the-art simulation exercises, cutting-edge research experiences, and global service.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Patients who are recovering, healing or living with neurological issues deserve the level of support offered in the hospital wherever they live. We have the opportunity to expand our strong support system growing our services to assist patients in living to their fullest potential and re-connecting with their communities. We will develop support programs for successful life management for patients with diseases of the brain and their caretakers, similar to our stroke support group.
