Thank you for stepping up to the challenge and doing what we cannot do. I’m sure it’s exhausting and overwhelming at times, but I’m praying that you are encouraged and refreshed in between shifts and that you have opportunities every day to see the difference that you’re making. I pray that you might be the one to give someone hope today, a hand to hold, a smile, a reassuring presence. Hang in there! We appreciate you!!

Thank you, thank you for being there for all who are needing care. In February and March, I received devoted attention and care from my hospital and a rehab facility after I fell and broke my right hip. Everyone I came in contact with exhibited skill and care for my injury, beginning with the EMS crew that picked me up off the ground, nurses, surgeons, x-ray techs, CNAs, physical therapists, housekeeping crews, and on and on. And, now, the loads for you are so much greater. May God grant you safety in the days ahead.

We cannot thank you enough! We can’t experience exactly what you are experiencing, but we do know that you are literally putting your lives on the line for all of us. Many people have been called heroes when they have found themselves in situations where they had no choice. You have choices, but you still choose to perform heroically. I was thinking that I hope we can somehow repay you someday, but I realize that, for you, the lives you are saving and helping are the reward you value the most. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Five years of great care are now being replicated for others, not without risks to the givers. The scripture is more than ever true: greater love has no person than to lay down their life for their friend or unknown patient. Courage and love flow together and we thank God for those who serve and risk.

I first came to work at UNC in 1969! I remember coming in the front door (then facing the Bell Tower) and seeing the plaque that said: “Built for and by the people of North Carolina.” I knew I was walking into a special place. I have come and gone from this wonderful medical center, and worked in many excellent health care facilities during my nursing career; proudly I spent the last 8 years back home at UNC. Wherever, I practiced, I talked about UNC care as emblematic of that plaque which now hangs proudly in the concourse. Through this pandemic you are living up to those words every minute and in a most courageous manner. Thank you for being there for all North Carolinians and, the world. Thank you for your knowledge, skills, compassion and dedication. So very proud of you all.

“Under the shelter of each other, people survive”: one translation of an old Irish saying. (I also like “Life is strange.”)

My daily thoughts and gratitude are with you who brave terror and trauma as you give shelter, comfort, and care to others. The loneliness of mortal risk comes to each of us, but yours is a truly heart-rending situation.

To each soul around you, no matter your role, you embody compassion. Every kindness from you brings light to our darkest days. Your courage makes even your smallest tired smile a treasure in a recipient’s life, including those that soon may end. Your thoughtful gentleness lends strength against pain. I’ve been a patient, often stunned in pain and mortal fear from various causes, many times over hard-fought decades. The kindnesses and skills of every person who ever entered my care spaces were the strongest medicines of all, whatever their respective tasks. Each of you is a powerful force for good.

We whom you comfort do see you, and we care. We know you as cherished neighbors, loved ones, our personal heroes. Again and again, we’ve seen you fight for us in lonely, awful grinds that took all of your energy but that gave us back some life. We ache for your health and for your peace of mind. We want desperately to return the favor, to protect you, but don’t know how.

Current research news tells us that the cavalry is fighting its way up the nearest hill. I pray that it will reach you soon.

I thank you, both here and each day in my thoughts. I deeply hope that each of you will come out of this crisis in good health and that all will respect your extraordinary service for the rest of your hopefully long, joyful lives.

While it is a different kind of war, we are facing as ugly and unforgiving an enemy as our country has ever faced in it’s history. I would like to paraphrase the battle cry of the United States Army Rangers: “Tar Heels lead the way”! Hoo Rah…???
